Apple 8 GiB UMA RAM is as good as 16 GiB on other systems
Apple received a lot of criticism for the fact that the Macbook Pro starts with 8 GiB of RAM. You don’t want to hear about the criticism – 8 GiB UMA RAM is as good as 16 GiB on other systems.
When Apple introduced the Macbook Pro with an M3 chip, it received a lot of criticism because it started with 8 GiBytes of RAM. Especially in the Macbook Pro target group and with the starting prices that Apple charges, this is no longer up to date and 16 GiByte is appropriate. Nobody is surprised, because Apple’s upsell strategy is also working on mobile devices. You simply configure the basic model so that most customers automatically choose the next better model.

nterestingly, an Apple man has now commented on the topic of storage in the Macbook Pro. Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing, Bob Borchers, believes that Apple’s 8 GiByte of unified storage is equivalent to 16 GiByte of classic storage. Some might consider this thesis to be daring.
“Comparing our memory to other systems’ memory is not truly equivalent because we use memory so efficiently, use memory compression, and have a unified memory architecture.
In fact, 8GB on an M3 Macbook Pro is probably analogous to 16GB on other systems. We’re just able to use them much more efficiently. So I would say that people should come to me and try out what they want to do on their systems and I think they will see incredible performance. When you look at the raw data and capabilities of these systems, it’s truly phenomenal. And that’s where I think people need to look beyond the specs, and actually look beyond the capabilities, and listen to trusted people like you who have actually used the systems.
People need to look beyond the specs and actually understand how this technology is used. That’s the real test.”
The argument that Apple can of course use memory much more efficiently thanks to its closed system will be difficult to refute. At the end of the day, even on the BSD fork MacOS, you simply use apps that are simply more or less well optimized and that require memory depending on the task. Most customers who buy a Macbook Pro are also active in corresponding fields – video editing, image editing, layout and design.
That’s why the critics don’t really want to follow the argument. DRAM prices are also not so high that this would be critical, especially in this price range. Getting back to the upsell: Anyone who buys a Macbook Pro will probably also invest the money for 16 GiBytes of memory. This changes the price of the smallest 14-inch model from 2,000 euros to 2,229 euros. With 1 TByte HDD it is already 2,459 euros. And as is well known, Apple has few upward limits.
