We recently took a look back at Jagged Alliance 2 in a retro special . A classic tactic that is still very popular today. This is partly because, despite various attempts, no developer has ever managed to create a worthy successor. With Jagged Alliance 3, a team from Haemimont Games has now ventured into this project together with publisher THQ Nordic. With Ian Currie, the developers also had the creator of the series on board. The fans’ hopes were therefore high. When we first looked at the game around a year ago at Gamescom, we were also confident that this time the creators could actually manage to capture the essence of what fans love about Jagged Alliance. The game is now available and we of course jumped into the battle in the test to find out whether the developers have achieved their ambitious goal. We’ll explain why Jagged Alliance 3 is an excellent tactical game and why die-hard fans of its predecessor won’t be completely satisfied.
Between the lines
The setting of the game is the fictional African state of Grand Chien. Here the democratically elected president was kidnapped by a rebel military organization calling itself the Legion. As a result, Legion fighters have taken control of important parts of the country. The state is in danger of sinking into chaos and civil war. To prevent this, we are hired by the President’s daughter to restore order in the country and free her father from the clutches of the Legion. The starting position is therefore very reminiscent of its predecessors. However, Jagged Alliance 3 (buy now/ €12.74) significantly more from the story as the game progresses.

As it quickly turns out, this time there is no such clear distinction between friend and enemy as in Jagged Alliance 2. In the political and military power struggle for Grand Chien, several factions with different motivations have their fingers in the game. In addition to the Legion, there is a communist freedom movement under the charismatic leader Chimurenga. Then the country’s regular military also plays a certain role. And as if that wasn’t enough, foreign interests are of course also involved in the mix. This means the story can have one or two surprising twists. Of course, this means that our mercenaries always get caught between the fronts of different interests.
As the game progresses, this also means that we have to take setbacks and the front changes to our disadvantage. Responding to these developments to maintain the upper hand adds welcome momentum and additional excitement to the campaign. In this context, we also liked the fact that the game tells a lot more small side stories that help us get a deeper overall picture of the situation in Grand Chien.
